Costruita su di un sito che si dice fosse stata la villa dell’imperatore Diocleziano, questa dimora è da considerarsi come uno splendido buen retiro a soli 50 km da Roma. Questa area era molto amata dagli antichi romani, che erano soliti trascorrere qui le loro vacanze.
Oggi si trova all’interno di un borgo­ – Castel San Pietro – ora solo vicino, un tempo parte di un castello medievale, accanto al quale si è sviluppato un villaggio rinascimentale.
I tratti di questa magnifica villa sono stati raffigurati in un dipinto del Caravaggio del 1603 (“Il Sacrificio di Isacco”), esposto alla Galleria degli Uffizi a Firenze.
La villa, di circa 400 mq., si compone di un piano terra, un primo piano e una corte con terrazzo che si affaccia sulla vallata del fiume Farfa, dove spicca l’omonima Abbazia fondata nel VII secolo, e su di un curatissimo parco, al cui interno abbiamo lo splendido Giardino Segreto (1000 mq, un giardino all’italiana, un tempo di epoca romana).
Al piano terra si trovano un ingresso, uno studio affrescato, e un salone doppio con camino e una grande e luminosa finestra panoramica. Quello che una volta era un giardino rinascimentale, mostra lecci e querce centenarie, e vede ancora la fioritura di un tasso vecchio 400 anni (uno degli alberi del Lazio ufficialmente catalogati), di prati d’acanto e palme dell’800. Il tutto circondato da mura costruite nel ‘600 per contenere i terrazzamenti. All‘interno del Giardino Segreto troviamo una bella dependance (40mq x 4,35 h), detta lo Studio dell’Artista, mentre un’altra più piccola e romantica si trova nel parco. Nel terreno oltre il giardino, di poco meno di quattro ettari, e che, estendendosi in lunghezza, permette piacevoli passeggiate, alberi di ulivo pluricentenari – probabilmente piantati dai monaci dell’Abbazia – producono un olio già insignito di numerosi riconoscimenti internazionali.
