Longwood is a historic rice plantation on the East Branch of the Cooper River forty-five minutes from downtown Charleston. The area is rural and made up mostly of other plantations including Quinby, Halidon Hill, Middleburg, Cedar Hill, and Bonneau Ferry. Many properties including Longwood have been protected by conservation easements which allow for continued historic uses such as hunting, farming and timbering, yet discourage future development. The plantations here are almost 300 years old and among the most beautiful in the South. They rarely come to market.
Longwood has a mile of waterfront. Its land is spectacular with woodlands, rolling pastures, lakes and ricefields. The main house is on a hill surrounded by live oaks with wonderful views in all directions.
In recent years Longwood has been used for horses with an area near the house being a polo field. The land is perfect for horses. Pastures have good soils and are fenced and cross-fenced. There are two workmen's houses near the rice-fields, and a barn, stable and equipment sheds near the house.
A unique feature is a hill overlooking the river which resembles an Indian mound. A house was there in the 1700's, but no longer exists. The location was first known as Pompion Hill, which later morphed into "Punkin Hill". The Pompion Hill Chapel built in 1763 is one of the most charming structures in the Low Country. The Chapel is located on the riverbank next to Longwood's western boundary.
Longwood has appeal not only due to its historic nature, but also due to its commanding view of the Cooper River. It is a regular shaped tract of moderate size that also gives it particular appeal. Being located 45 minutes from downtown Charleston greatly adds to its desirability. There is no prettier place.
The Longwood House is a spacious two and a half story brick building built in 1963 surrounded by live oaks
and giant camelias. There are beatiuful views in all directions. The house covers 6894 square feet which
include six bedrooms with six full baths. The house is well constructed with good quality and condition.
