The property known today as Clovelly was first inscribed into the Land Registry Office in Bracebridge in 1902 and five years later was roughly separated into three portions owned by Richard Green, Ettie Wilkins and J.W. Tyrell. If it were not for J.W. Tyrell however, the Clovelly of today would be nonexistent. This man divided his portion into 22 lots with the vision of selling them to prospective buyers looking to build vacation homes on Lake of Bays. The Clovelly Subdivision Plan was numbered Subdivision Plan M-47 for all of Muskoka and didn’t attract much attention due to the lack of roads and lack of interest in buying cottages at the time.With no buyers, Tyrell built three cottages and rented them out hoping a Clovelly community could one day be established. Launched in 1907, the steamer Iroquois travelled across Lake of Bays delivering Royal Mail and transporting locals from dock to dock, including the Clovelly community dock. At one point the entire community was served by a natural spring in the woods and eventually a well was dug. If there was ever a fire, Clovelly had a fire bell to be rung to signal danger to other community members. The bell can still be seen when driving down Clovelly road. Many of the cottages have remained owned by the same families who purchased them so many years ago and adds to the area’s rich heritage.
