This exclusive area of Naarden exudes a special charm. Inspired by Norwegian wooden building styles, the Amsterdam architect G.E.A Sandtmann designed and built some sixteen mostly double wooden homes here between 1909 and 1915 in what was then an undeveloped area on the southern edge of Naarden bordering Bussum. The region had been part of a defensive military zone, and construction within this originally forested area had accordingly been prohibited, except under strict conditions that importantly influenced the style and the building materials. The original character of both the street and the complex of wooden villas has been lovingly preserved and their status as a national monument is now protected by historic conservation regulations.
