In dramatic isolation among the pines, meadows and wildlife we find this architectural masterwork by architect Max Holst.
At the end of a gravel road, concealed behind rocky outcrops, the house spreads out against a captivating landscape of horse pasture and untouched pine forest. One is seldom confronted by a location in which the changing seasons and shifting natural landscape make themselves so strongly felt. This unrivalled experience of nature is completed by close proximity to the archipelago, and the private mooring down below in Säbyviken.
The 25-metre cliff face falling away to the adjacent meadows is the single dominant feature behind the house’s design, both in terms of location and tonality. The design language and impression left by the building seem almost arrogant in their modesty and introversion. Naked structural elements, simple straight lines and unexpected choices of material coalesce and endure over time.
The volume of the house is divided into two parts connected by a passage. The first block houses areas for social interaction and time spent together; thoughtful use of space provides a semi-open-plan hallway, kitchen, dining area and lounge with clearly defined divisions between the various areas. Varying ceiling heights create something close to a sacral atmosphere, with visible roofbeams and generous natural light. One flight up and somewhat tucked away, there are two small bedrooms and a bathroom.
The more private part of the house is more adult and enveloping in its design language. Here, on the ground floor, the library and media room/office are located. In a secluded position one flight up is the master bedroom, dressing room and bathroom with twin showers, with the feeling of a boutique hotel suite. The house breathes deliberation and attention to detail, with every addition carefully weighed up.
The undisturbed location, with the neighbouring meadows to the west, provides an uninterrupted horizon on which to rest one’s eyes; entirely unoverlooked for those who appreciate their solitude. No further building is permitted according to the current plan. The perfect property for anyone seeking an uncompromising home with nature on the doorstep.
