Hawai'i Life- Waimea

Description

Waimea (locally known as Kamuela) is a charming, upcountry town located at 2,600 feet above sea level. Set against the majestic backdrop of Mauna Kea, Waimea has a rich ranching history due to its proximity to Parker Ranch. Established more than 160 years ago, this cattle ranch now spans more than 250,000 acres. Waimea is one of the oldest, most established communities on Hawai‘i Island and in the entire state, having grown up organically as workers from Parker Ranch settled there. Waimea is still the heart and center of the lives of the many ranchers employed in the rolling hills nearby, and also home to world renowned scientists. International astronomical organizations have made Waimea their headquarters due to the town’s proximity to the many observatories near Mauna Kea’s summit. Kamuela is the Hawaiian language equivalent of Samuel – chosen to honor Samuel Parker, founder of Parker Ranch. Of Native Hawaiian heritage, Parker played a central role in local politics during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Since there are Waimea towns on Kauai and O’ahu, the Big Island Waimea’s official post office name is Kamuela (you can’t have two with the same name in any state!). Residents love their tight-knit community, unique landscape and rich traditions. Waimea is known for its wide open spaces, excellent private schools, cultural offerings, and farm-to-table dining—and of course, it’s Hawaiian cowboy (or paniolo) culture. We look forward to welcoming you to our cozy Waimea/Kamuela office. Stop by for a hot cup of coffee in this cool, laidback upcountry locale. We’d love to show you around and help you find a home in one of our state’s most unique and special places.
