Uranium King Charles Steen's Ranch on Market in Nevada

(LAKE TAHOE, Nevada)  The expansive and breathtaking Historic Steen Ranch, built by uranium king Charles A. Steen in 1964, is on the market for $5.8 million. This Washoe Valley property, located off Old Highway 395, is listed by Chase International. The mansion showcases the architectural talents of Clarence Mayhew.

Nestled at the base of the Sierra in Northern Nevada, the estate is comprised of 25.2 acres with a 16,000-square-foot main residence and indoor swimming pool, 2,830-square-foot guesthouse, caretaker's house,4,800-square-foot circular 11 double-stall barn and riding arena, and five-bay garage. There are 10 bedrooms and nine baths. A long drive leads to a private gate and landscaped grounds that incorporate granite boulders, creeks, ponds, pines, shrubs, rolling lawns, waterfalls, ponds, streams and putting green.

Steen, a geologist originally from Texas, made millions after discovering a highly-enriched uranium deposit in 1952 outside of Moab, Utah, sparking the Uranium Rush of the 1950s. As part of the United States Atomic Energy Commission's financial incentives during the Cold War, prospectors were encouraged to locate domestic uranium deposits for the country1s nuclear weapons program. The Commission, having established itself as the only legal buyer of uranium in the country, artificially manipulated prices to reflect their uranium needs, and raised the price of uranium above most other metals.

Steen moved his family to Washoe Valley after building the ranch, which, was located, at the time, near the residence of the Comstock millionaire miner Sandy Bowers. Steen also served a brief stint in the Utah State Senate.

"The entire property is steeped in history and rich architecture," Shari Chase, CEO and founder of Chase International, said. "The views are simply magnificent and the ranch is unassumingly grand. It's a definite treasure."
