Diane Turton, Realtors and the American Cancer Society Launch "Safe Summer Under the Sun" Program

Diane Turton, Realtors and the American Cancer Society (ACS) have formed an alliance to launch the "Safe Summer under the Sun" program that was kicked-off yesterday at the real estate firm's Corporate Centre in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. The program is important because, according to Bruce L. Warshauer, M.D., a local dermatologist, the sun's rays have gotten stronger over the last two decades and Ultraviolet (UV) rays are more intense than ever.

"About 99 percent of the people who live on the Jersey Shore or visit the ocean playground know that they need to protect their skin whenever they're out in the summer sun," says Dr. Warshauer. But sometimes they forget to use sunscreen, put on a hat or slip on shirt when the sun gets hot.

To remind people to protect their skin when they're outdoors this summer, each of the real estate company's 22 offices will distribute free "Safe Summer Sun" information kits. The kits contain the American Cancer Society's new      "Parents' Guide to Skin Protection" pamphlet, Coppertone SPF 50 sunscreen contributed by the Schering-Plough Corporation and a map and guide of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

The ACS brochure explains the easy, fun and safe sun basics: Slip! Slop! Slap! ®.  Adults and children are reminded to slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen with a SPF rating of 15 or higher and slap on a hat that shades the face, neck and ears. The pamphlet also recommends planning outdoor activities that avoid the midday sun whenever possible, applying sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors and using a sunscreen lotion, spray or gel that contains vitamin E and antioxidants.

"We urge beachgoers, joggers, bike riders, surfers, boaters and anyone down at the Jersey Shore to come into one of our sales offices to pick up the free materials," said Diane Turton, the real estate company's president and broker/owner. "Bright sunlight along with surf, sand and scenery are what attracts millions of people to the Jersey Shore each summer. Although we love the sun as much as anyone, our aim is to encourage people to take a few common-sense precautions so that they can enjoy their day at the beach, on the water or relaxing in their backyard. This way, all their lasting memories of the shore will be wonderful ones."

Frank Mascia, regional vice president of the American Cancer Society's Jersey Shore Region, said, "Our alliance with Diane Turton, Realtors is about being in the right place at the right time and providing the right message. Thousands of people visit the company's sales office during the summer. Our  guide to skin protection is the perfect reminder for anyone who is spending a weekend, week or an entire summer here or plan to make the Jersey Shore their permanent home."

The firm's sales offices are located along the coast from Sea Bright in northern Monmouth County to Surf City and Beach Haven on Ocean County's Long Beach Island. Each office is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
