Location description:

The Buen Retiro Park is the real protagonist of this neighborhood of Madrid that has its flanks in the streets of Alcalá and O'Donnell in the extreme north, Doctor Esquerdo street in the east, Avenida del Mediterráneo and Paseo de Reina Cristina in the south and the street of Alfonso XII in the western end.
The park's origins date back to the time of the Catholic Monarchs in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. However, the construction of the neighborhood is much later. It dates back to the late 19th century, when the city's demographic boom led to successive enlargements. This area has a layout similar to that of its neighbour Barrio de Salamanca, with perpendicular streets with wide sidewalks and some of them equipped with boulevards to enhance walking and recreation. This is the case of the streets of Ibiza and Alcalde Sainz de Baranda. Although it is mainly residential in nature, its proximity to the city centre means that it combines this with commercial and business activities.
The visit to Retiro Park is an essential date for any tourist who arrives in Madrid. It is advisable to complete the route through the city's most famous urban park by letting yourself fall into the neighborhood around it, and enjoy some of its many commercial, cultural and gastronomic attractions.
