Immediately evident as one drives along winding Slate River Road to the private subdivision of Alpine Meadows, is why artist Ruth Esserman chose this location to build her one of a kind home. Constructed entirely of found and recycled materials in 1973, several local craftsmen contributed in sculpting this home from scratch. Materials were collected from across Colorado, including a greenhouse from Denver, metal from old mines, locally harvested stone and timber, donated stained glass, and more. Items not used within the house were incorporated into the landscaping as sculptures or outdoor seating.
The front door was taken from the dynamite room of an old mine and leads into the entry tunnel. The tunnel is an assemblage of salvaged metal, doors, and stone. It sets the stage for entrance into the great room with soaring timber-framed ceilings, expansive windows, and a spacious, open layout. Natural light fills the great room, creating the perfect entertaining area or creative space. The centerpiece of the room is a large mining storage tank that has been converted into a fireplace at the base and a shower with 360-degree views and sunroof on the second floor. Also on the main level is the kitchen, a full bath and sauna. Stone stairs lead to the second floor loft where there are currently two sleeping areas and second full bath complete with a clawfoot tub. A side entrance off the second story leads to the rooftop, an absolutely unrivaled spot for spectacular, summer star gazing!
The exterior of the house was designed to blend with the beautiful, natural surroundings, while taking full advantage of the unmatched location. Built-in benches allow you to fully absorb the serene landscape around you.
