INDIALANTIC, FL - Dale Sorensen Real Estate Brevard (DSRE Brevard) Sales Agent Dawn Atkinson Spaccio is on the hunt for a long lost Herbert Hoover Jr. High (now Middle School) time capsule, but time is running out for the former student. The capsule was buried during the United States’ Centennial in 1976 and Spaccio wants to unearth it for the 40 year mark. But that date is fast approaching and it hasn’t been as easy to find as Spaccio thought it would be.
The time capsule was a project of Mr. Jack Deppner, a social studies teacher at the time. He formed a group of bicentennial club students who collected items to include in the time capsule. Items ranged from film interviews and camera, an eight track tape, a newspaper and items that were popular during the 1970’s. The original plan was to dig the capsule up 20 years later. That didn’t happen for a variety of reasons. Now, Spaccio and others have been trying to track down the students involved to get them all together for the unearthing and presentation to current students. The challenge is in finding all the students, and the capsule. Deppner tried to locate the capsule, but he forgot the exact location. Deppner has since passed away and Spaccio is working with a couple other former teachers who may know the exact location. Spaccio cannot get approval to dig the capsule up until she knows the exact location.
“I’ve been trying to find this time capsule for five years,” said Spaccio. “We used a GPR (ground penetrating radar) and have narrowed the location down to two spots in a 20’ square foot radius, but until we know the exact spot, we cannot begin the dig. I really want to find this capsule, for Mr. Deppner and his wife, who was a French teacher at the school at the time and for all the students of yesterday and today.” Spaccio has a plan for when they do find the capsule. “The plan is to have the entire school of students in the gym and we will reveal the contents in front of the whole school. Once we empty the capsule, we will refill it with items from students of 2015 and bury it in same hole for another 40 years.”
Spaccio grew up in Indialantic and has lived here her entire life. “I’ve never really felt the desire to move away from here. I love it here. There’s a reason so many people choose to retire here. I love the history of this town and I love sharing it with anyone who will listen.” Spaccio even started a blog about the community where she shares history of the area and what makes it unique.
So far the story about the time capsule has been in Florida Today twice as well as the New York Times through Associated Press syndication. It’s also been on Channel 13 and plans are for Steve Hartman to have it on his CBS produced show “On the Road”.
