RALEIGH, N.C. – (Sept. 17, 2007) – G. Smedes York, chairman of the board for York Simpson Underwood Realty, was inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame at a public ceremony on Sept. 13 at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh. York was recognized for his visionary leadership in business, public service and charitable fundraising, and for his continued dedication to improving the quality of life in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina.The mission of the Raleigh Hall of Fame is to honor individuals and non-profit organizations that have made lasting contributions to Raleigh’s proud history. Smedes York’s father, James “Willie” York, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005.York Simpson Underwood is a Raleigh-based residential real estate company with offices in Raleigh, Cary, Chapel Hill/Durham, and Pinehurst/Southern Pines, NC.Smedes York earned his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from North Carolina State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From 1964-1966, York served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, receiving an Army Commendation Medal for his service in South Korea.In the late 1970s and early 1980s, York served the Raleigh community in the political arena. He was a Raleigh city councilman, District E, from 1977 to 1979. He then served two terms as mayor of the city of Raleigh, from 1979 through 1983.In addition to his role with YSU, Smedes York has served in a leadership capacity for many organizations. He is the 2007 chair of the Triangle United Way Board of Directors, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Research Triangle Foundation, the YMCA of the Triangle, and North Carolina Amateur Sports. York is past-chair of the North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry and the N.C. State University Board of Trustees.
