1431451151Paul A. Leys, Broker/Owner of Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty, discusses how he got his start in real estate and the path his career has taken since. Paul has served on the Luxury Real Estate Board of Regents since its inception in 2004 and most recently participated on a panel on keys to running a successful luxury real estate business during the 13th Annual Luxury Real Estate Spring Retreat in Costa Rica.

How did you get your start in real estate?

I listened to the advice of my father when I told him I was considering real estate as a career; he told me to go and talk to Gerry Dwyer (the then owner of Gustave J. S. White Real Estate Company). I did and when I went back to thank him for his time, he offered me a desk when I pass the test. I’ve been here at Gustave White ever since. That was in the spring of 1988.

What path has your career taken?

My career path has taken me in many different directions in the real estate world; one that has kept me busy in sales with both buyers and sellers as an associate broker, but also one that has taught me how to appraise, has given me my auctioneer’s license that I actively use, has taken me to the ranks of President for both my local and statewide Realtor associations, has landed me committee appointments on NAR committees and most importantly has allowed me to succeed to the point where I was able to purchase the company with my business partner back in 2000.

Why is your company successful?

Chris West (my business partner) and I have succeeded based on the fact that we have been able to establish a true ‘team-driven concept’ here at Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty. Our team does a unique job of sharing information and covering for each other when needed. It really is a great place to come into work each and every day.

What are your favorite parts of your job?

My favorite part is the satisfaction derived when you find a first-time buyer their first home or help the family that really needs your help in selling their family homestead. You are then remembered forever in their family history as the one who sold them their house or was able to sell their house for them. It’s a great feeling.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Time spent with my wife and kids and extended family is paramount to me and I am thankful that real estate has allowed me to be around to help coach the kid’s teams and watch all their various activities. For myself, I enjoy playing ice hockey year round in the ‘old man’s league’, surfing in the summer, tennis and sailing when I can find the time!
