Broker Q&A: Ken Jacobs
Posted by Who's Who in Luxury Real Estate — April 7, 2015
Ken Jacobs, Managing Director of The Ken Jacobs Team in Sydney, Australia, shares the path his real estate career has taken and what makes his company so successful. Ken serves on the Luxury Real Estate Board of Regents and in 2014, delivered the country’s top three residential sales and currently lists the Elaine estate, Australia’s most significant property.
How did you get your start in real estate? After qualifying as an Optical Dispenser, I soon realized that I wanted a more challenging and rewarding career. I saw real estate sales as offering both challenge and reward so I took a leap of faith and have not looked back.
What path has your career taken? I started in residential real estate, eventually managing the premier office of Australia’s largest real estate network. Again I wanted more challenge so I joined Jones Lang Wootton and later Knight Frank as national director of the International Hotel & Resort Division. Whilst I very much enjoyed this area of business, I was less enamored with the politics associated with big companies. In 1999, I decided to launch my own company with a very clear focus of targeting the premium end of the residential market.
Why is your company successful? My business is predicated on quality of advice and an absolute focus on the top end of the residential market. Unlike my competitors who have a small geographic area and very broad price spread, my company has no geographic boundaries but only focuses on properties in the top few percent of value.
What are your favorite parts of your job? The strategy of the deal process and intriguing diversity of the people who buy and sell at the very top end of the market.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work? My wife Louise works with me and when away from work we enjoy driving our collection of classic cars and spoiling our grandchildren, which requires travel as my granddaughter lives in L.A. and my grandson in London.
