In 1971, sculptor Louis VanDercar built Annie, a 65 ft. long concrete dragon that stood watch over the Indian & Banana River lagoon on the southernmost tip of Merritt Island, an area eventually and aptly named “Dragon Point.”  Annie served as a longtime Space Coast landmark for both locals and boaters, known as far away as New England as a meeting spot along the famous Intercoastal Waterway and great place to catch redfish.  Annie stood watch on Dragon Point for over three decades until August 2002.  The famous dragon, weathered by many years of erosion, salt spray, and hurricanes, collapsed into the river lagoon.  Now 12 years later in 2014, only remnants of her shell remain.

After years of the property ownership being in limbo, a Brevard county judge has ruled that the current owner has clear title. Zoning variances are also in place for redevelopment. In mid-March, the Brevard County Board of Adjustment unanimously granted five zoning variances that will let Dragon Point's future landowner build a new mansion within the general footprint of the decrepit 5,707-square-foot home.

Melbourne’s beachside area including South Merritt Island is an excellent choice for those looking for a small town feel, while being close to all your everyday conveniences.  Within a short drive to central Florida attractions or south Florida hotspots, Melbourne is off the beaten path enough to avoid traffic and congestion in your daily, around-the-town travels.  The low crime rate, low cost of living, great schools and proximity to the ocean makes Melbourne’s beachside area one of best hidden gems along the Atlantic Coast of Florida.
