1402960259SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Zephyr Real Estate, a long-time supporter of the Meritus College Fund, awarded a four-year scholarship to Allen Huang at the 18th Annual Meritus Awards Reception last week. The scholarship is valued at $16,000, 100% of which goes directly to the student.

Meritus College Fund bridges the gap to higher education by providing four-year scholarships to low-income, college-bound San Francisco public high school graduates who demonstrate strong potential for college in spite of challenging life circumstances. Meritus also connects its scholars to caring adults, peers and community resources, giving them the moral support and personal connections they need to persevere and graduate.

The Meritus College Fund was established in 1966 by Dr. Henry Safrit and several of his associates, who saw that many talented local students lacked the opportunity to pursue higher education. Over the years, 535 students have benefited from the program, and over $6 million have been awarded in scholarships. Many volunteers and mentors participate in the program, which proudly claims that 87 percent of its scholars graduate from college.

Allan Huang is a graduate of Balboa High School and will be attending UC Davis this fall. He writes: "Through the social discrepancies between my family and school life, guidance of PULSE (Peers United for Leadership, Service and Equity), and the compassion of the dragon boat community in San Francisco, I have learned something about what success really means. I see mine being my ability to critically apply my knowledge to comprehend and challenge the adversity of the communities I belong to. While college is a gateway to prosperity in this capitalistic society, money becomes much less when you are able to make a difference in someone's life. In my eyes, that is the true measure of success."

Bill Drypolcher, Founding Broker of Zephyr, Randall Kostick, Zephyr’s President and Damon Knox, from Zephyr’s Pacific Heights office, were on hand to meet Allan and offer their congratulations for continued success in his educational endeavors.

“Allen has demonstrated his eagerness and enthusiasm for a college education, and we are honored to be a part of his journey to success,” commented Drypolcher. “We will continue to follow his path as the future unfolds.”

Over the past 10 years, Zephyr has funded 13 four-year scholarships through donations and contributions from agents and staff. Additionally, Drypolcher serves on the Advisory Council of Meritus.
