Kentucky Select PropertieLOUISVILLE, KY - Local real estate firm Kentucky Select Properties today announced the Eleanor Foreman Scholarship in honor of the woman who integrated the Louisville Board of REALTORS® by becoming its first Black sales associate in 1963. She founded and owned Eleanor L. Foreman Real Estate at 2304 West Broadway in Louisville. Mrs. Foreman was also the first African-American contract negotiator Eleanor Foreman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She passed away on July 30, 2020 at the age of 94.

Kentucky Select’s Eleanor Foreman Scholarship covers the annual cost of one recipient to:

• Attend real estate school

• Acquire state licensing

• Receive a two-year membership to the Greater Louisville Association of Realtors (GLAR) and the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB)

• Gain Errors & Omission insurance

• Complete 48 hours of continuing education required of new real estate agents

The recipient will also spend their first two post-licensing years as a sales associate with Kentucky Select Properties, where they will receive training and mentorship from leaders and other agents at the top selling, 100% locally-owned independent residential real estate company in Louisville. The company is accepting applications now through April 16 on its website at www.kyselectproperties.com/scholarship.

“Eleanor Foreman was a civil rights pioneer in the Louisville real estate industry and we’re proud to honor her inspirational life and legacy with this scholarship,” said Kentucky Select Properties Managing Broker and Partner Jay Gulick. “She integrated the all-white Louisville Board of REALTORS® in 1963, five years before the Federal Fair Housing Act, which prohibits discrimination in the sale or leasing of property. We hope the scholarship elicits a culturally representative pool of applicants including candidates from Black, Brown and other marginalized populations that have been disproportionately impacted by discriminatory housing policies, like Redlining. Mrs. Foreman helped open the door for a new generation of real estate professionals. There is still so much more we can do as a real estate community to encourage and assist aspiring BIPOC professionals to pursue real estate as a career and influence more equitable housing-related outcomes that close wealth and homeownership gaps between whites and people of color.”

Added Jeffrey Hayes, Eleanor’s son, “On behalf of my entire family, I am both honored and proud of this scholarship that Kentucky Select Properties has created in memory of my mother. Mom would have been very happy with this recognition. This scholarship gives minorities the chance to grow, develop and improve themselves and their communities. Mom’s motto was always ‘Development of the person, development of the community, development of relationships.’ Mom was very active in the community and her enthusiasm was contagious. I can think of no greater honor to her memory than this scholarship.”

In addition to Mrs. Foreman’s biography, details of the scholarship and the online application form, the Scholarship webpage at www.kyselectproperties.com/scholarship features a link to an interview Mrs. Foreman did in 2000 with the University of Louisville Oral History Center on the “Civil Rights Movement in Louisville.”
