Four Reasons People are Making the Move to Reno

Sierra Sotheby's International RealtyRENO, NV — “The Biggest Little City” is going to need a new nickname. The Reno metro area was ranked No. 1 nationwide for job growth by the Milken Institute’s 2018 Best-Performing Cities List, which was released in January. Reno-Sparks also added 48,000 new jobs in the last five years, with 2018 seeing 29 companies move or expand into the area — including 15 technology center relocations such as Tesla and Apple.

The No.1 ranking in job growth coupled with the thriving startup culture that has brought dozens of small businesses has aided in making Reno not only a hot destination for tourism but as a forever home for families.

Low Cost of Living Compared to Other Cities

The income you’re earning will go further in Reno in comparison to similar cities. With utilities, healthcare and transportation below the national average, The Silver State is ranked among the top places in the nation that have more people moving in than leaving, according to reports from moving companies, largely due to its affordability compared to its neighboring states.

“After Tesla announced they were building their Giga factory right outside of Reno, it created the Tesla Effect,” Sierra Sotheby’s International Realty Agent Rosi Booker stated. “With high prices and political uncertainty in California, people are moving their investments to Reno as well as cashing out on their primary residence in the Bay and surrounding areas.”

Reno Ranks as a Top Educated City

Reno is home to the University of Nevada, Reno, a Tier 1, R1 university, as classified by the Carnegie Foundation, that has some of the top programs in the country for business, journalism and engineering, as well as a renowned medical school. With the university continuously expanding, students are coming up to Reno for school and are choosing to put down roots due to the job availability, resulting in a higher socioeconomic status.

According to a recent study by Applied Analysis, “the nearly 4,000 graduates of the University each year can be expected to contribute substantially to the Nevada economy, earning $72 million each year in additional labor income as a result of their time at the University.”

Entertainment Abounds

In the past decade, Reno has built a lively midtown district that is bursting with local eateries, breweries and shops. Visitors flock to the annual Reno Rodeo, Artown, Hot August Nights, Rib Cookoff, Balloon Races, Barracuda Championship, Air Races and many more.

Big name artists are headlining at a multitude of venues across town and nationally televised events such as the Miss USA pageant are choosing Reno as their host destination. Reno is home to a minor league baseball and soccer team, as well as professional golf, college basketball and nationally ranked high school sports teams and is just 45 minutes away from Lake Tahoe, recently ranked ‘Best Lake in America’ by USA Today. Whether you are interested in the arts, nightlife or outdoor recreation, Reno has something for everyone.

“The job market has brought not just big companies with many employees (like Tesla, Panasonic, Microsoft, Blockchains, etc), but also the small businesses like new restaurants, server tech companies, robotics and more have brought a crucial mix into our marketplace that makes it a much more diverse place to live,” Sierra Sotheby’s International Realty Agent Soni Margulies says. “With that diversity, plus the mountain and lake lifestyle all around, the draw to our area sets Reno apart.”

Something for Everyone

Over the past decade, Reno has worked tirelessly to evolve from an exhausted stereotype of years past to an eclectic collection of neighborhoods, with a variety of different architectural styles existing within blocks of each other. Nestled in the nooks and crannies of Reno are Tuscan inspired villas, charming American craftsmen, Victorian estates, Ranch-style and Mid-century modern galore. Where there is a gated track community with white picket fences and matching mailboxes, there are farmhouses on acres of land to follow.

“Reno has a broad variety of properties from gated golf course communities to property with acreage and water rights as well as new developments with smaller lots,” Booker explains. “The best part about Reno is you can drive three minutes in any direction and see ten different types and styles of homes. From sleek and modern to cozy and rustic, we have it all.”
