What does it mean to be a Salt Springer? Probably as many definitions as islanders. Yes, yes...I've heard the one about an argument surrounded by water. Of course, it does help to have an opinion, before joining the coffee group at Barb's or TJ Beans or Rock Salt or Penny's. The Island is often described as a healing space. A hike through Ruckle Park or down to Burgoyne Bay or up to Mt Maxwell supports this theory...there is an energizing rhythm to this natural vista we call home. The 10K diet, the organic revolution, is alive and well on Salt Spring. What I notice, though, is what lies behind all the surface furors that erupt from time to time. There is an underlying caring community here. Think of the house fire and the community that steps to the plate with immediate aid for the afflicted family, often complete strangers. Think of the amazing volunteers that step forward with personal caring commitment & fundraisers, for so many worthy causes. Think of the welcoming response to those in need, whether economically or as the result of a sudden health issue interruption...again, often for complete strangers. My image of the island is that of an ocean windstorm...lots of chop & change on the surface, individual waves sloshing into others, diverse thought encountering other diverse thought, and yet, if one drops down like a diver, it is serene & united. A community that cares? I think so. Yes, scenic beauty. Yes, an alluring yesteryear experience with proximity to major centres. Yes, an artistic economic basis with all the interesting outcomes that implies. And yes, a thoughtful and caring individual ethic that encompasses all islanders and their welfare...now that is special! More information about Salt Spring Island & its Islanders? Call me!
