The mission of HBF is to build independence, provide opportunities, and elevate lives for individuals with disabilities, as well as their families, in our community. Each project aims to provide people with safe access to their homes and to empower them to accomplish everyday tasks with ease. Modifications to homes include accessibility grab bars, ramps, bathroom renovations, stair lifts, and home additions tailored to a client’s specific needs.

Celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, the HBF was started in 1993. In that time, the foundation has helped more than 2,200 individuals and families, helping to relieve the burden on caregivers by increasing the safety of the home and providing independence for the client and their loved ones. The goal for the next few years is to continue to expand the number of people HBF is able to assist in our community.

Carson became involved in the organization after working in the home building industry in Denver for over ten years, when she was invited by a local builder to attend a fundraising event for HBF. She was instantly moved by their mission and was very motivated to get involved.

“At first, I would participate in smaller tasks like painting ramps and feeding volunteers,” says Carson. “But I quickly realized I wanted to have a larger impact.”

Now in her fifth year as a Board Member, Carson enjoys every minute she spends working with this group. Right now, the largest need for the foundation is additional volunteers and donations to help underwrite the costs of materials and supplies needed to complete the customized home modifications.

“We are able to complete a large number of modifications because of the contributions of skilled volunteers and collaborative partners,” says Carson.
