North Carolina State Capitol

Built between 1833 and 1840, this National Historic Landmark is one of the best-preserved examples of a civic building in Greek Revival-style architecture. It originally housed the governor's office, cabinet offices, legislative chambers, state library and state geologist's office. Currently, the governor maintains an office on the first floor. The other restored areas of the Capitol are open to the public.

Neighborhoods

Inside the Beltline

Cristened shortly after the completion of the I-440 Beltline in the 1980s, the area known as "Inside the Beltline," or ITB, is a collection of several smaller, historic neighborhoods and modern, renovated downtown residences. New condo communities are being built in century-old textile mills and department stores in an effort to meet the revitalization demand. Well-established enclaves, like the trendy and eclectic Five Points or Victorian-inspired Oakwood neighborhoods, present numerous opportunities for convenient city living.

North Raleigh

Beginning at Six Forks Road, just north of I-440, and extending east to Capital Boulevard and north to Falls Lake, North Raleigh is a fast-growing suburban area of Raleigh homes with everything from vast estates to townhome communities in a series of adjacent neighborhoods. The North Ridge neighborhood off Falls of the Neuse Road is viewed as one of the most affluent areas in the city, while other popular subdivisions include Stonebridge, Stonehenge, Bent Tree, Durant Trails, Falls Village and Alyson Pond. This area of Raleigh appeals to many residents, and its ammenities confirm the appeal.

East Raleigh

Capital Boulevard on the west side and New Hope Road on the east side form East Raleigh's boundaries. While older, well-established neighborhoods, like Hedingham, are favorites in this area, the significant new developments create some healthy competition. This area, according to many real estate experts, represents the best opportunity to find a deal on new construction.

West Raleigh

Although it is technically located Inside the Beltline, West Raleigh bears its own unique features, largely because it encompasses North Carolina State University and a wide variety of housing options. Lake Johnson and Raleigh's historic Pullen Park afford families a place to congregate during leisure hours. Cameron Park, with its large homes and porches, is one of the most recognizable neighborhoods in the area.
