Constructed in 1859 of brick and tabby (completed in 1861) and situated on a full city block, The Dr. Joseph Johnson House, better known as "The Castle", is a historic mansion in Historic Beaufort's Old Point neighborhood.
Overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, the home faces the prevailing southern sea breezes, while giant live Oaks and mature gardens surround the estate.
The house is Italian Renaissance in feeling, and said to be almost an exact replica of one in England, destroyed during World War II. The walls are of soft brick made in Dr. Johnson's brickyard on Lady's Island and covered with a thin layer of plaster. The color is muted and changeable, in shades of gray, tan and pink, subtly shifting with the light.
A major restoration has recently been completed including two new gourmet kitchens, new baths, new paint throughout, a new roof and new HVAC systems. The main kitchen features a Sub-Zero refrigerator, a Wolf gas stove, and a Meile dishwasher. The ground floor offers a catering kitchen with dual full-size Sub-zero wine coolers, a gas oven and stove, and refrigeration/freezer drawers.
All new baths with Calcutta gold marble and Waterworks fixtures. The home offers the original flooring, beautiful millwork and moldings, a grand center hall with a double staircase, and massive double verandas that overlook the grounds and the waterway beyond.
The estate offers six bedrooms, five and one-half baths, six working fireplaces, and approximately 7932 sq.ft. of living area.
A restored original brick outbuilding stands ready to serve as an exercise room or office, automated parking gates and a three car carport complete this truly stunning estate.
Located in the heart of Beaufort's "Old Point" historic district, the Castle is a short walk from a number of fine restaurants and shops, an outstanding waterfront park and a marina. Beautiful beaches and numerous golf courses are within a 20 minute drive.
A former director of the National Trust for Historic Preservation called it "One of the great houses of the South Carolina coast." He spoke of "the extraordinary grandeur of the almost medieval house . . . its air of somber mystery, set in great oaks at the water's edge."
