The urban neighborhood of Beacon Hill is tucked neatly along the Charles River and beside the Common. Primarily residential, yet with an array of interesting and necessary shops, Beacon Hill remains quaint, friendly and very village-like. Cobblestone streets and brick sidewalks accommodate the classic 18TH century architecture, illuminated by gas streetlight and adorned with ivy-covered fences and lovely gardens. The “Flat” of Beacon Hill stretches from Storrow Drive (bordering the meandering Charles River) through Charles Street. Charles Street, known as “Antique Alley” is lined with lovely antique and specialty shops, as well as commercial and dining storefronts. The Hill portion of Beacon Hill is divided into two distinct Sections: The South Slope and the North Slope. The South Slope, is comprised of Pinckney, Mt. Vernon, Chestnut and Beacon Streets. Louisberg Square is also located on the South Slope and primarily consists of single family residences. Acorn Street still has its original cobblestone street and sidewalks. The mansions were built on the South Slope of Beacon Hill, with the servants quarters located in the modest buildings located on the North Slope. The North Slope is a vibrant residential area of Beacon Hill.
