FORT LAUDERDALE, FL– September 9, 2016 Florida Luxurious Properties, a real estate brokerage in Fort Lauderdale hosted an informative event titled Rising Sea Levels and South Florida Real Estate. Federal Researchers estimate that sea levels in South Florida could rise another 2 feet by 2060 and almost 6 or 7 feet by 2100. With the erratic changes in climate and South Florida’s vulnerability to hurricanes which brings heavy and intense rainfalls, this could compound the implications for Fort Lauderdale.
Fort Lauderdale with its 165 miles of waterways that gives the city the Venetian ambiance is now threaten by its viability. Fort Lauderdale residents are increasingly concerned about this issue with the not-too-distant reminder of the post-Thanksgiving storm last year which evokes the image of a woman in knee-high rain boots walking her dog.
With King Tide season approaching, Julie Jones-Bernard the Broker Owner of Florida Luxurious Properties felt that it was critical that property owners in Fort Lauderdale, especially those with waterfront properties are informed and engaged on this issue. As a proactive member of the local community, Julie and her team timely brought together a panel of speakers to address this growing concern.
Dr. Nancy Gassman, Assistant Public Works Director for the City of Fort Lauderdale delivered the keynote address along with Keren Bolter Science Director of Coastal Risk Consulting, Rose Ann Lovell, Florida Luxurious Properties Broker Affiliate and Partner of Lovell Marine Construction and Benjamin Olive, Attorney at Law with Hackleman, Olive & Judd, P.A. Dr. Gassman outlined the strategy and immediate measures undertaken by the City to address the matter which includes the installation of 59 one-way valves on drainage pipes across the City to keep high tides from backflooding into street, deploying tiger dams (plastic tubes filled with water), building sandbag walls and so on.
Nearly 100 local homeowners and residents attended and the engaging question and answer session is a clear indication of the community’s acknowledgement of the issue.
