Attractions

Butchart Gardens

More than a million people visit Butchart Gardens each year to enjoy floral displays and themed gardens on a scale seen in only a handful of places in the world. Seven hundred varieties of bedding plants provide continuous bloom over 22 ha (55 ac) from March through October. In summer, multi-hued 'Night Illuminations' make strolling through the gardens a magical experience. Butchart Gardens has grown in size gradually over 100 years. It is still operated by descendents of Jennie Butchart, who started it all when she attempted to beautify a worked-out cement quarry near her home with a few blooms. Butchart Gardens is a 30-minute drive north of downtown Victoria via Highway 17.

Government House

The official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of BC and the ceremonial home of all British Columbians, Government House has extensive grounds that contain an array of gardens with themes such as English Country, Winter, British Columbia Native Plant, Herb, Sunken, Rose and Rhododendron. The gardens are in full bloom from May through September. The grounds are also home to a rare Garry oak ecosystem on 8.9 ha (22 ac) called Woodlands.

BC Legislative Buildings

The BC Legislative Buildings dominate the architectural landscape of Victoria's Inner Harbour. Designed by renowned architect Francis Rattenbury in the 1890s, they are a visual feast inside and out. Gold and silver leaf, murals, ornate plaster details and wood mouldings ornament the richly-hued walls and ceilings. Visitors also encounter solid marble columns, statuary, stained glass as well as unique architectural flourishes. Be sure to take some time to appreciate the beauty of the grounds, which feature flower gardens, fountains, statues and exhilarating views of the harbour and mountains. Tours are available Monday through Friday.

Fairmont Empress Hotel

Francis Rattenbury had the grand chateaux of Europe in mind when he designed the Empress Hotel in 1908. He tended to blend architectural styles in his buildings; the Empress was no exception. Domed polygon turrets draw on classical influences, while Tudor arches in the lobby give that part of the hotel an Elizabethan feel. The picturesque broken roofline is dotted with Gothic dormers, while the 475 guest rooms are decorated in Edwardian-Victorian vintage style. Traditional high tea is served daily.

Preserves and Parks

Beacon Hill Park
At 75 ha (200 ac), Victoria's oldest municipal park, Beacon Hill, handily accommodates both nature lovers and sports enthusiasts. The park's paved and cedar-chip walking trails wind past manicured lawns, picturesque bridges, quiet lakes and ponds as well as themed gardens that are in full bloom from mid-May through October. Beacon Hill Park is within easy walking distance of downtown Victoria.

Goldstream Provincial Park
Just 17 kilometers from downtown Victoria, Goldstream Provincial Park lies amid the splendour of an old-growth temperate rain forest. There you can see a world class salmon-spawning stream with thousands of Chum Salmon returning between October and December. It doesn't stop there. During this amazing time of year you can visit the park and it's always-changing Visitor Centre. The centre is named after Freeman King, an early naturalist who probably reached more children than any other naturalist on Vancouver Island. The centre is at the mouth of the river, overlooking the Goldstream estuary, nestled among giant black cottonwoods and red alder trees.

East Sooke Park
West Coast wilderness awaits you at East Sooke Regional Park. Experience it as you hike along the windswept rocky coast, over dry hilltops, through dark rain forest to sheltered coves. Over 50 kilometers ( 31 miles) of trails draw you into the timeless beauty of East Sooke. Begin your exploration at one of the three entry points.

Fisgard Lighthouse Historical Site
a National Historic Site - The first lighthouse on Canada's west coast is still in operation! There hasn't been a keeper here since the light was automated in 1929, but every year many thousands of visitors step inside a real l9th century light, and capture some of the feeling of ships wrecked and lives saved. Built by the British in 1860, when Vancouver Island was not yet part of Canada, Fisgard's red brick house and white tower has stood faithfully at the entrance to Esquimalt harbour. Once a beacon for the British Royal Navy's Pacific Squadron, today Fisgard still marks home base for the Royal Canadian Navy. Inside the building are two floors of exhibits, dealing with shipwrecks, storms, far- flung lights, and the everyday working equipment of the light keeper a century ago. Right next to the tower stirs on the second floor, a specially-made video evokes the loneliness and isolation that was the lot of the l9th century keeper.
