Summer means show & shine classic car events! On Father's Day, on Vancouver Island, we enjoyed the SunCruizer 20th anniversary car show at Parksville/Qualicum Beach. A WOW, indeed! Labour Day finds the annual North Island classic car showcase in Campbell River...mark your calendar! Canada Day on Salt Spring Island? Yes, a car show Island-style. Enjoy! Thank you to all the car buffs who keep the ethic going. My faves? The 1950s Studebaker...still looks modern! The mid-50s Chev BelAir. The mid-50s T-Bird (portholes & all). The late 40s Buick. Great designs out there! A car show in your area? Go!

Is the Bubble About to Burst?

Jun 24, 2013

Courtesy of The Dawn Thomas Team Today we bring you a fascinating article from Inman news asking: are we currently in a housing bubble? And if we are, is it about to burst? So many people, Sellers, Buyers and the Real Estate industry are all conscious of what another ‘burst bubble’ would do and no one wants that but especially the federal government. So we have to ask, do you think we’re in another bubble?

Long-Drive Champion at Tuhaye

Jun 20, 2013 — Dennis Hanlon, Summit Sotheby's International Realty

Today is the summer solstice. Well technically it's 6:00 PM this evening. But we'll just go ahead and take that today is one of the longest days of the year and it's officially summer. Which means  a cold front went through which took the temperature from the 80s to the 60s and frost at my house this morning. Today is spectacularly gorgeous, although a bit cool. Typical summer day in the mountains. This weekend is one of the highlight events of the summer called Savor the Summit. This is where Main Street is closed to all traffic and instead the local restaurants put one long table from the top to the bottom of Main Street with each restaurant serving its particular flair. There will be music on the street, much socializing, and always a great dinner. This is one of the must-do events in town and many of the restaurants are sold out months before the event. Each month the Park City Board of Realtors hosts a luncheon at various venues around town with speakers talking about various aspects of real estate, the resort industry, or other related fields of interest. Today's luncheon was held at Tuhaye Country Club, a beautiful golf course community about 10 minutes outside of town where the speaker talked about the demographics of resort buyers retirees and soon-to-be-retirees. While this was quite interesting and informative, the highlight of the luncheon came afterwards where a demonstration was put on by the world champion golf long drive record-holder. He had spent the last couple days at Tuhaye trying to set the Guinness Book world record for the longest drive and chose Tuhaye  because of its altitude (about 6,000 feet above ski level and the configuration of the course. He did break the world record and established a new world record of over 540 yards. Slightly longer than what I can hit the ball. It was really interesting to watch him, particularly during his warm up when he took some short-irons, starting with a 9-iron, and could hit the ball much further than I could with a driver. After about 15 minutes of warming up, he took out his driver and hit four or five rocket ships. After these four or five shots, his coach who was with him told him to go ahead and let go and really hit it. Pretty amazing to see somebody hitting a golf ball 450+ yards. He hit about a dozen drives like this and then proceeded to hit a few trick shots. One of the most amazing was when he teed the ball about five feet up and hit the ball upward. I've never seen a golf ball travel so high. All of it was quite fun, quite interesting, and extremely entertaining. When I got back I was telling a co-worker about it and he asked what did I learn from this. I learned that it's good to be 30 years old, in great shape, and a former pro-baseball player.

Multi-Generational Playgrounds for the 1 Percent at Play

Jun 20, 2013 — Promontory Club, Summit Sotheby's International Realty

Summary: At one time, the fun was reserved for the adults, whether on the fairways, the tennis courts or poolside; activities for children were, at best, an afterthought. Increasingly, today’s upscale communities are catering to families with children—and grand-children—providing dedicated facilities, activities and programming. A few communities, like Promontory, in Park City, have taken it to the next level.
