Things to know about Salt Spring Island!

Jan 31, 2013 — Liane ("Li") Read, Sea to Sky Real Estate

Did you know? Salt Spring Island has a hospital, plus extensive seniors oriented opportunities. A superb retirement lifestyle is available. It has 3 elementary, one middle, & a state of the art senior secondary school. There is a private school on island, too. A great family oriented lifestyle can be found here. Salt Spring also offers a theatre (ArtSpring), an indoor pool, and a brand new library resource centre in the heart of Ganges Village. Two marinas, a Sailing Club with private dockage, plus 8 lakes (4 of them open to the public for swimming, sailing...no power motors allowed on the lakes). Lovely beaches, easy access for beachcombing, swimming, kayaking, sailing...and always that alluring environmental beauty, preserved by the Islands Trust (the form of governance on the Gulf Islands). Parks, hiking/walking opportunities (clubs to get involved with, if desired), plus a vibrant arts based economy (galleries, studio tours, artisan markets & craft fairs). The 10K diet is alive and well...farmers markets, gate stalls where you pick up free range eggs and garden produce & leave the money for same (the honour system works here). 3 ferries (from Vancouver Island, Victoria, & mid-Vancouver Island), plus 3 floatplane companies (regular skeds out of Vancouver downtown & airport, from Vancouver Island's Maple Bay, & from Victoria's airport) with year round service, and with seasonal service from Kenmore Air out of Seattle...very easy to come & go from Salt Spring! Nothing is absolutely perfect, ever, but Salt Spring Island and the Canadian Gulf Islands come close! More info and details on how you can be a part of the Island lifestyle? Call me! I look forward to helping you to first discover your dream property, and then to helping facilitate your successful purchase of same.

The End of Sundance

Jan 30, 2013 — Dennis Hanlon, Summit Sotheby's International Realty

Sundance Film Festival has officially and finally come to an end. I know its over when two events have occurred: first is when all of the "no parking" signs on Main have been removed and we can finally park in town again and the second is the Best of Fest screenings for the locals. On the first Monday after the festival has ended, Sundance tries to make up to the locals for 10 days of traffic and craziness by screening two of the award-winning films free on Monday evening. This year I was able to obtain tickets to one of the films and saw a very interesting movie about the soundover industry. Very strange subject for a film but they managed to make it very lighthearted interesting and fun. The movie was called "In a World..."

Unique voices in the internet world? Yours!

Jan 29, 2013 — Liane ("Li") Read, Sea to Sky Real Estate

It seems that no livelihood is untouched by the eraser of the Internet. In the post-Internet world, a consumer driven template, we have the twitterverse questioning established political stances. It's a bottom up model. We have Internet based e-trading in stocks. Cars are researched & bought online. Travel arrangements are done online. Almost 97% of real estate sales begin with an online search. Education is experiencing the accountability the Internet demands...that hungry consumer asks questions and demands answers that satisfies them...not the bureaucracy. In retail, with online shopping, it's no longer necessary to have a bricks and mortar storefront. Is that the reason we see so many vacant stores in malls & plazas? When the lease is up, the storefront closes and the owner goes to an online address? Hmmm...if so, what about the landlord's side of the equation? What about commercial investment choices? So many shifts and changes. What to do? Well...accept that change is the mantra of our time. Learn to swim in the sea of uncertainty. Think about ethics as a template for a lifestyle with meaning. Embrace technology. Plus...it's ok to tippy-toe to acceptance of change. Do it at your rhythm. Some of us are Speedy Gonzalez types, dashing forward always. Some of us take much much longer to be at ease in the skin of change. It's all equal. The good thing about the "consumer in control" model is that each consumer's response is as valid as another's. So, it's never been more true than since the words were first uttered by that most famous of Ancient Greeks...Socrates: know thyself. Only one of each of us, and that's the pleasure of the post-Internet world: your unique individual voice counts! There is only one of you. Your personal ideas are important. And your thoughts are? Always welcome!
