Castiglione

The climb up to the panoramic spot of Castiglione is without doubt one of the most worthwhile if only for the enjoyment of the spectacular scenic views which can be seen in the direction of the Faraglioni, additional viewing towards the towns of Capri which emerge from the Mediterranean scrub wonderfully set round slopes of the natural saddle which separates Marina Grande from Marina Piccola.

The view of the bay of Naples and the volcano Vesuvius brings additional feelings of past history that the place had on more than 2000 years.

The castle of Castiglione, as one sees it today has the characteristics bestowed on it by reconstruction work and by restoration work which was only finished in quite recent times.
The powerful embattled ramparts and the huge square reinforcement towers, which are also surmounted by a crown of merlons, stand on the summit of a rocky peak.
The side of the building which faces the sea seems to fall in sleep crags and cliffs of bare rock in which the gigantic Grotto of Castiglione can be seen, down towards the sea, whilst on the side facing the Charterhouse of St. James is covered by a thick verdant undergrowth, from which some magnificent and typical references seem to peep out at one.

The Castle of Castiglione was originally a Medieval structure, built on the site of an ancient Greek acropolis that became one of the villas of Emperor Tiberius.
During the numerous pirate raids the Castle was an important defensive rampart for the population of Capri (even though most of the population used to take shelter in the Grotto of Castiglione).
This grotto which was once a prehistoric seat since the Neolithic era, was used by the Romans as temple, connected to an Imperial Villa above the grotto. At the Villa one can make out the remains of walls of opus reticulatum.

This magnificent villa, which stands on the northern slope of Castiglione was discovered and excavated at the end of the XVIIIth century by the Austrian archeologist Norbert Hadrawa.

It seems that numerous rooms, later hidden by a disastrous attempt to cover up the villa, a large amount of interesting and valuable exhibits were found, such as mosaic and marble floors, frescoes and stucco decorations which were unfortunately lost after the the plundering of the Villa by Hadrawa himself which took the pieces to built the Caserta palace.
